Underrated Benefits of Strength Training
Recently, a lot of my recent conversations have been about the underrated benefits of strength training. While most people start exercising for aesthetics, the benefits of strength training extend far beyond what meets the eye.
Underrated Benefits of Strength Training
Improves Mental Health: Recent studies show that physical activity is 1.5x more effective than leading medication, and counseling. The release of endorphins during weightlifting sessions can alleviate stress, anxiety, and depression. I like this short video on "hope molecules".
Increased Longevity: Strength training will increase life expectancy by 10 to 17 percent. It keeps your brain healthy, blood pressure under control, lowers the risk of heart disease, and enhances bone density. As we age, bone density tends to decline, leading to an increased risk of fractures and osteoporosis. Strength training helps counteract this natural decline.
Enhanced Cognitive Function: Strength training not only builds muscle but also stimulates the brain. The cognitive benefits of lifting weights include improved memory, sharper focus, and increased mental clarity.
Increased Self-Esteem and Confidence: Lifting weights also lifts one's self-esteem and confidence. Achieving fitness goals fosters a sense of accomplishment and empowerment. It teaches you the importance of hard work and carries over to all aspects of your life.
Improved Sleep Quality: The physical fatigue induced by challenging workouts promotes deeper and more restful sleep, contributing to overall mental resilience and emotional balance.
If you work out regularly, you probably know all of that but it's a nice reminder.
99% of people start exercising for the physical benefits and learn the rest along the way.
So if you don't work out regularly, now is always the perfect time to start.
